Every Journey Starts with One Step but my finished 37 hours later in my hotel room. I caught a flight from Chicago & then went down town to catch a bus to Rapid City. The Bus station made Bus Aras look posh :-)
It was direct bus from Chicago to Milwaukee (WI) to Tomah (WI)to Minneapolis (MN) to Sioux Falls (SD) & then direct to Rapid City! In the Bus station I stood out like a well dressed thumb, in fact out of 300 people I was the only person reading! What caught my attention was the two teenagers selling candy bars & black supremacists literature were wearing socks. These socks had a bulge in them, that was when it dawned on me that they were electronically tagged! Naturally enough our bus was delayed my a half an hour, this upset one lady. She tried to reason with the junior management in the style of a Jerry Springer contestant, this failed. Needless to saying to the security team "I am going to whip your weak black ass" failed to win them over as well! But the bus driver was a figure of authority (Also 6ft 4' & a fit 220 lbs) and gave a little speech on bus etiquette as he left the station that night, it went like this " This is MY BUS, you use headphones for your music & games, if your neighbour can hear it, it is too loud, IF I can hear it IT'S WAY TOO LOUD! There is no smoking on this bus, If I catch you smoking I WILL TERMINATE YOUR JOURNEY WHERE I CATCH YOU!, If I catch you drinking alcohol, I WILL TERMINATE YOUR JOURNEY WHERE I CATCH YOU! If I catch you taking drugs I WILL TERMINATE YOUR JOURNEY WHERE I CATCH YOU! So after that introduction to bus etiquette, I settled down to a nice sleep, which I got for about two and half hours, only to be woken in Tomah for a meal break at 02:45. Yep you guessed it, it was at a McDonalds. I never wanted food less in my life than I did at the moment! So we were at McDs for an half hour, them folks were wolfing down fries & burgers while I just day dream about sleep. So we all hopped back on the bus and I slept til 06:00, when I woke up starving, I really longed for two things some fruit (to combat the smell of chips) & clean socks, as mine were grubby & sticky after 24 hours of wear. So luckily we pulled into Minneapolis bus station where we had a half hour to change buses. Naturally enough I was ravenous but no food place was open except A Mr Buddy vending machine which served a nice beef and cheese sandwich, thankfully the bap was soggy in the middle so that saved on the chewing time. So armed with that and a bottle of water I boarded my second bus. A large American student sat next to me and he was a good kid going to Montanna, a mere 21 hour journey. But two native American Indian sat in front of me one with impressive tattoos & the other just big. I tried not to eavesdrop but when you keep hearing "Shit man, you're going to violate my parole" it sorts of perks up your interest. Funny after that my lust for my sleep just disappeared :-). So we drove through Wisconnsin, which was full of lakes and trees. This then gave way to the great plains, where you had 100 acre fields and was flat for hundred of miles in every direction. This was stunning. So my student left only to be replaced by a bigger man, who drove a truck but he was nice but big. Sure the three hours to Rapid City flew with him spilling into my seat. When I arrived into Rapid City, in my haste to leave the bus I dropped my mobile but a Hispanic teenager picked it up and called out for the owner, which was really nice. So I hopped into a taxi, who handed me a coupon which entitled me to a free ride after nine journeys. The Quality Inn motel is lovely, clean and nice facilities. So I checked in & the first thing I did was slip into a nice bath.
