On our travel into the Baltic Sea, we passed under a bridge that connects Sweden to Denmark. It was night time and of course, we were sleeping. On the evening of the 7th of July, at the end of our 1st full day at sea on our return to Dover, we passed by this bridge again. It was amazing.
The Oresund Bridge in Copenhagen, Denmark links Denmark and Sweden for
the first time since the end of the Ice Age over 7000 years ago. The $4
billion bridge/tunnel project was completed in 2000 and consists of a
5-mile bridge, 2.5 mile tunnel, and a man-made island. Malmo, Sweden,
the third largest city in Sweden, is now just 35 minutes away from
Copenhagen via the train across the Oresund Straits.
The high bridge part of the Oresund Bridge has the longest cable-stayed
main span of all bridges in the world. That goes for both road and rail
traffic! And, the tunnel part of Øresundsbron is the world's longest
underwater tube tunnel, also for both road and rail traffic.
