A Rainy Rainforest Hike

The next day we woke up to an amazing breakfast, with organic yoghurt, rainforest muesli, banana pancakes with black sapote sauce. Lovely coffee. Didn't want to leave, but leave we did.
That morning we had an appointment for a guided rainforest walk at Cooper's Creek with Christian, a German botanist. Since there didn't seem to be rain coming (other than grey, grey sky) we left our raincoats in the car and set off on a nice walk. Nice until it started pouring and pouring and pouring.
We kept going, but by the end, all we wanted was a nice clean clothes. We did manage to learn that the fewer the plants on the forest floor, the more primitive the rainforest-we were in for a treat with the palms glowing with drops of water collected around its edges. The palms were so effective at sheltering us from rain that we weren't fully soaked until we left that section. We saw fungi that grew like hair, black palms, and all sorts oddities, the names of which I can't recall. It was an experience that we'll not forget, if only for the soaking-but what is a rainforest without the rain?
