Where I stayed
Castle Inn

We're staying at the Castle Inn in Warsaw. It's in Old Town right next to the castle. I booked it on Expedia because it was cheap and had a great location. You never know when you're booking a hotel in Europe if "double" means one bed for two people or two beds for two people. It's inconsistent from site to site. I usually send an e-mail directly to the hotel to request two beds. Didn't work this time.

It turns out the Castle Inn is a little romantic boutique hotel with different themes in each room. Our room doesn't have twin beds, it has one bed. "Oh, but it's a king size bed" the front desk clerk says. The thing isn't even as big as a queen size. This is going to be great. A total of more than 12 feet and 380 pounds of men in one little bed.

Did I say romantic? Yes indeed. The desk clerk showed us to the room and when she opened the door I see our little bed and what do you know, it's a four-poster bed with a lacey covering and a doily on it. I make a crack about how romantic it is and she say's it's the "Granny Room." Seriously? Now we're two big guys sharing one little bed in the "Granny Room" in a romantic boutique hotel.

Oh, it gets more interesting. I notice that there are ear plugs on the nightstands on either side of the bed. Hmmm..., wonder what that's all about. Then I started to figure it out. There's no A/C in the room so you have to open the windows. The hotel is on Castle Square and there's a lot of activity. In fact, some drunks out there are singing a Kings of Leon song over and over and over as I type. But that's not the loudest part - it's the bells from the church in the square that go off every fifteen minutes. We're moving into My Cousin Vinny territory here...

Oh, Curt, your posts are becoming very entertaining. Granny rooms, earplugs, drunken Poles, filial intimacy... stuff you just don't get at a generic, cookie-cutter Residence Inn! It's what makes travel in Europe so delightful. Keep'em coming, Wieden.

on a more serious note, I was touched by your journey to your father's childhood home. Is he still alive and able to view your photos? You're lucky that the building survived the war. Wasn't that part of central Poland heavily bombed by the Germans? Anyway, I thought it was wonderful that you were able to see it with your son, Max - and linking three generations back to your ancestral homeland. Good stuff!

well, that's why people don't go on vacation to Poland, duh.

Glad you're enjoying my blatherings. It was definitely cool seeing the place, although when I was there taking pics I wasn't really sure it was the right place. Various family members who were a little older than my dad at the time confirmed it to be correct. If you look at one of the pictures taken into the courtyard from the street, the little house on the left was where my great-grandparents lived, and my grandparents and their family lived in a bottom apartment on the left side of the building all the way to the back. My dad is 72 and has never been back there which has always surprised me. One of his comments to the pics was he thanks God he was able to spend his life in the U.S.

Easy, there. We've stayed in far weirder places in the States. This is just a place trying to be different and it works. We didn't have any issues being in the same bed. He stayed way over on his side and didn't come near me, and vice versa. Kinda like me and you :)
