The first five people I met in Banff where Australian, which sums up Banff very well. Most people at the hostel are Aussie, and about half the people working in town are Aussie. A little piece of down under on the other side of the world. It's weird to hear the accent everywhere, have gotten used to not hearing it.
The hostel is only 20 minute walk out of town. Walking along I saw a couple Elk outside someone's house. Very cute town, lots of touristy shops selling the same stuff.
I walked along Banff avenue, which is the main street, to Bow River. A further 2km or so along the river are the Bow River Falls. Beautiful walk and falls. bits of snow and ice along the path too. I stood on my first patch of ice. very exciting! and then slipped and nearly fell! lucky no-one was around to watch.
I walked the other way along the river to the caves where the first hot spring in Banff was discovered, and along a boardwalk through the marshland there. very pretty but man does it smell BAD! lots of sulphur in the water.
I made friends with the Banff Springs Snail, which lives in five of the hot springs here and no-where else on earth. Tiny, tiny creature.
I stopped in at Grizzly House restaurant for lunch, had Buffalo, Caribou and Elk. Yummo, the caribou was my favorite. They come with a stone hot plate and so I cooked them as I ate them. very cool experience.
Passed through the Cascade Gardens at Canada Place on my way back home. saw a couple more elk or caribou just outside the hostel. magnificent creatures.
