It was an early start to our day. We had to be at Rome Termini Station at 7:45 (first we had to catch a train from Basilica San Paolo Station to Termini) to get a train to Perugia and then Florence. This was our first long distance travel with the trains. We were a bit worried that we would have a difficult time understanding where to catch the train, on which platform to wait and getting on the correct train and not ending up traveling in the wrong direction. But we were relieved to find that all the information is pretty easily understood if you use your noodle a bit. Reading the signs and learning basic Italian helps allot.

Here are a few Italian words we have learned so far:
Ciao - Hello/Bey
Buon giorno - Good morning/afternoon
Arrivederci - Goodbey
Prego - You're welcome
Si/No - Yes/No
Uscita - Exit
Ora - Time
Arrival - Arrival
Cafe - Coffee

We stopped in Perugia for breakfast. Having Nuttela on croissants is my favourite breakfast so far! Still having a hard time with the coffee and we're really glad we brought along the instant coffee and big mugs.

Its pretty cold too. About 4C.

Arriving in Florence we booked our seat reservation for the train to Venice on 1 Jan 2011 and then had to navigate the streets with our baggage to find the little hat shop owned by the Couch Surfer we would be staying at. Coming round the corner and seeing the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fior (the Dome) took our breath away. This was our first cathedral. It is incredible!

Serena, our host, gave us the key to their home and explained how to get there. We were amazed to find that it is in one of the little streets right next to the Dome. Our first Italian home cooked meal that night and a walk up to Piazza Michelangelo will forever be a cherished memory. We had our first Spritz. A Italian drink of wine and champagne.

We got to bed very late but couldn't wait to explore Florence even more tomorrow!
