A stop @ tescos in the morning & a walk for ancient Meggie, physio visit then off to Haddon Hall after lunch. About 45 minutes drive. Went thru lots of little villages on the way & followed a hearse so far we decided someone was getting buried @ Haddon but eventually they turned off.
Haddon hall was first built in the 12th century with a few additions in the 14th. It was uninhibited for 200 years. It's amazing wandering around these worn old stone floors & looking at 600 yr old tapestries on the walls. We saw the old kitchens - which had several massive fireplaces, & a bakery & a butchery. There was an ancient stone chapel, walls had all been painted in the 15th century - it was faded but mostly visible still
Apparently several versions of Jane Eyre have been filmed there including 1 last year. There is to be a Jane Eyre exhibition at the end of July - sorry to have missed it.
To our great surprise the sun came out & we were able to enjoy the gardens too. Massive profusions of roses & clematis & daisies. Robin was in her element. We had a lovely, completely fascinating afternoon.
Popped into Bakewell on the way home & got a Bakewell tart for tea. They had other pies there too so finished up having pie & pie for tea to Robin's horror. We did have salad too mum!
We returned home a slightly more scenic route than rob intended as she missed a turn. Miriam had made me a love card to thank me for her gift. We perused weather forecasts trying to figure out what to do where it wouldn't be pouring with rain & made plans for Chester the next day & Ludlow in the weekend.
