Up early this morning so taking the opportunity for a last quick fix of internet before we leave again.  About 2 days travel now to the kazakhstan border and the delights we will have in getting across this border.  I was lucky to get across the Russian border (unlike poor Eion who had to go back to Kiev in Ikraine to have paperwork couriered out) - the camper is in Roger's name, so I did a letter  which Roger signed to say i had his permission to drive etc and also have a copy of his passport with his signature on - but forgot that when we went to india 18 years ago we had similar things  notorised at great expense by a suitably qualified solicitor.  Luda managed to finally persuade the rather bad temepered Rissian border man to let me through.  I hoped ROger might be able to sort something out and get the paperwork couriered out to me at Saratov but it's Easter back home and no notory available until TTuesday (today) - even in Yorkshire where they stay open on Good Friday. When Eion caught us back up he tells me he is a JP back in New Zealand and he can sign it etc - but won't have the fancy red wax seal that the Russians love and expect - but we'll give it a try.
As Ivan says, One step at a time....

Had an enjoyable day yesterday exploring a little of Saratov.  Shame the river was in low lying damp fog when we walked down to it, but you are not supposed to be able to see over to the otherside even on a good day.

As i was sat in the hotel lobby yesterday evening I heard some English being spoken.  later when Eion came to join me to email etc I mentioned to him that I'd heard some Englsh - when a voice from the other side of the lobby said - 'and that would be me' - Pete from near Newalk, working out here giving training at one of the local refineries.  He had spent all day getting from St Petersburg to here - he has been in Russia about twop weeks or so and hardley heard any English atall - so was a treat for him to have a chat to us.  Hi Pete if you are reading this - good luck with the rest of your working trip.

We were having a discussion yesterday about how the people in Ukraine and Russia don't smile back at you - and Luda says 'What have they to smile about?' - she says you cantell a non Russian on the streets in Russia because they have a different look in their eyes - the Russians have sadness compared to others.  We're all gob smacked has to how the woman look so smart - they walk around on high heels (narrow usually) and yet the streets all aroud are snow and mud covered, water logged and dirty - how do they manage to not break teir ankles?

Anyway better go and put the van in order before we leave about 8.30 this morning - I'm sure they are very fed up of seeing me sat in this lobby - can't get the signal back at the van even with the booster - tried sitting outside the front door on a bench but still no jo.  Boiling hot inside as per everywhere else in the city - radiators on full blast - too much for me.

Take care everyone,

Sue x
