Travelled to Stratford upon Avon today, called in to see Anne Hathaway's cottage at Shottery, it would have been a good sized house actually in those days and would have been a working farm.  The guide told us all about how nothing was wasted in those days, everything was eaten, no scraps and children were expected to wait on their parents at the table, and eat only when they had finished.  They even used urine to lighten their hair, and any excess was kept and sold to leathermakers.  Now there's a tip for all those of us who spend hundreds of dollars at the hairdresser every year!
After the cottage we spent some time in Stratford upon Avon itself, a pleasant and of course historic town with many half-timbered buildings, next to the Avon river, a familiar name in Christchurch.
We travelled back through Henley in Arden, apparently famous for its icecream, of which we couldn't help but indulge - mint chocolate chip - yum!!
While on the subject of icecream, Rob and Paul, you would be envious to know that Mr Whippy does his rounds daily in the area that UK Sue and Ray live.  The little bells peal away to announce his arrival outside their house.
The weather has been average, in other words sunshine and showers, which seems to have been the forecast ever since we arrived back in Rome, in fact the first two days that I was here were the best I had apart from Italy.  It's not overly cold, just unsettled.  Still, a little warmer than Christchurch and I see from the news that Wellington has had some pretty wild weather.  Luckily I can keep up on what is happening at home via stuff.co.nz as no mention is ever made of NZ on the UK news.  Oh, and I see the big earthquake last week has sent the South Island 30cm closer to Australia!
