Inigo and Jaione slept great on the couch and no problems with jet lag so far. Apparently its a lot worse going back to Spain than coming here. While everybody is yawning and waking up, I headed out to the local Staples to print up our tickets for the day and get us breakfast. There is a local bagel shop called Gotta Getta Bagel. http://www.yelp.com/biz/gotta-getta-bagel-forest-hills ... and Starbucks of course.
Back to the apartment, we plan out our day. We'd like to hit up a couple of major attractions to cross some items off of our Must Do list. The plan is to leave at 11am, take the E-Train allllllll the way over to Ground Zero WTC, visit there ..
Out the door and its definately raining. Not too hard though. And its not too cold. So its nice. All of us are sort of ridiculously positive minded travelers and after 30 minutes together we realize we are saying PERFECT! to every bit of news, good or bad, that we come across and it becomes an ongoing joke. ... When I forgot my pre-paid, week long subway pass, for instance ... PERFECT opportunity for a jog! ... When we got on the subway going the wrong way ... .PERFECT!! we got to see more of Queens! :)
Eventually we did make it to the WTC site, which really is just a huge construction zone right now. We visited St. Paul's Chapel, which was surprisingly not very emotionally moving for me. Not sure why. ...
Then it was off to Battery Park. We passed Wall Street along the way. And the rain kept up. PERFECT! Less people in line for the ferries!! :D Oh. One weird thing. There was this super angry and loud frenchie on the ferrie. He was SUPER screaming at this college aged kid he was traveling with
Visiting the Statue of Liberty was cool, as was Ellis Island. But more noteable was the fact that we had to go through TWO security checkpoints on ultra-lockdown. More invasive screening than at the airport. Best parts of that experience were when the security guard asked me if I had anything in my pockets and I said, "Just some warm nuts." ... Which was true. We'd just bought a mixed bag of them outside! We laughed. ... ... Then, for some crazy reason, Inigo had a metal spoon inside of his man purse. They didn't like that. ... But whatever. We made it in ok.
Ellis Island was neat, but they were closing up when we got there. The place to look up relatives names was closed already (bummer!) ... but they told us the exact same experience can be had online now. So. I'll do that when I get home. One neat thing was that there was a special exhibit on the Basque people (Jaione's heritage) .... Was really cool to read up on that and see a bunch of places we'd visited the last time we were at their house.
Back to Manhattan and back to WTC .... where we visited the Gallery
Next stop, Andrew's pad. Again we went up top to show off the view to Inigo and Jaione. And then to some awesome grub at the nearby noodle and dumpling house. Afterwards a nice long walk through SoHo and East Village with a stop in Washington Square Park where Janice did a rendition of Singing in the Rain.
Andrew = THE MAN for being such a great tour guide for us!
Back on the subways and back to the apartment for some sleep. My dogs are BARKIN' !!! Feeling better though. Hopefully tomorrow the sick will be nearly gone in me.
