After leaving Lake Louise we headed for Jasper. We decided to go on the Icefields Parkway highway. Keeping in mind it is the middle of winter in Canada, you can imagine the snow is heavy. The sign on the entrance to the highway said the road was only one stage above being closed due to bad weather and snow coverage, but we decided to use it anyway.
This was a great drive. This drive is supposed to take you past some of the biggest glaciers in Canada, but we couldn't see a thing due to the heavy snow and thick cloud cover. So here we were - a couple from Perth Australia that never gets snow, driving a SUV through the Rocky Mountains on a road barely open on the wrong side of the road (for us) in heavy snow barely able to see the road in front of us.
And we loved every minute of it. We even had to stop at one stage while the Park Rangers forced an avalanche up ahead to clear the road. This would have to be one of the most exciting and adrenaline packed drives we have ever done. Not to mention one of the most beautiful. The sheer whiteness of it all was incredible. Never have we imagined so much snow in one place. On top of all this someone was really looking after us. We attempted a very foolish over taking maneuver up hill in bad visibility on icy roads, only to see a car coming straight at us at the last moment. Somehow we went three cars across on a two lane road and no one got hurt. So we made it to Jasper.
Jasper is a cute town. We got to our hotel, and had a stroll around town. It was freezing cold but by this stage we had really got to enjoy the extreme cold, being so different from where we live. We found a great place to eat, and a couple of drinks and back to bed. A great adventurous day. A day of travel, and a day I will never forget. Tomorrow we go to Edmonton.
