Alice Springs - nice to be in a city again.
The drive up here was more lush and green than the previous day and so Fabrice didnt have a hard time driving the 300km or so to Alice. We arived in town and then after calling round a couple of guesthouses it became apparent my guide book is 4 years old! The 1st place had closed over 3 years before!
We went to 3 places before we found beds available just out of town. The place was ok but nothing special.
We had quyite a few beers in a locals pub in town speaking to a brother and sister from Melbourne with very, very interesting political oppinions - mainly in relation to Aboriginies, it was facinating talking to them
It was a cool day in Alice and it is such a small place there is not loads more to see here.
We were originally going to head over to Ayres rock and Kings Canyon before Alice Springs which makes a lot more sence in terms of kilometers covered but we needed the supplies of fuel, water and food that only Alice could really give us. We also wanted a bed for a couple of nights!
on day 2 we moved to a much nicer hostel and met some.... Characters in the evening. After a few hours of walking around, a few hours of internet catching up and a few hours of eating it was the evening and 1st Fabrice met an Aussie girl who was so unusual with Aboriginal blood in her although she was very white, she changed her name 3 times as she wanted to be her own person, she has no contact with any family (has a bracelet to say no next of kin), and has had a serious self harm problem a couple of years back- serious. Her arms look almost skeletal. BUT she was the ost amazing preson with amazing viewpoints and SO intelegent - I spoke to her untill 3 or 4 in the morning about everything - the type of person there just cant be more of on the face of the planet
Then there was an Australian school teacher who had just completed a 21 day walk in the outback. he had a wicket sence of humor but sucked at cards :-)
It was a great evening - one of the best of my travels - im really broadenin my horisons in terms of meeting people from every background imaginable - its great!
now its sunday, I had a nice chat with my Mum on the phone, the 2 'characters' have gone and now after internet and more water supplies Fabrice and I will head out, back into the hot red desert!
