Its another hot day in Charlotte with the outside temp in the high 90,sF and humidity at the UGH level.
The Nascar hall of fame is located in the center of Charlotte, NC. The side that is visible to the street is circular with race cars visible on a 33 degree banked track [Daytona like]. The 4 stories are devoted to different aspects of stock car racing. The first level is a movie which is an ear piercing overview of nascar and racing. The history sections include a written description, artifacts, an audio section and the actual car on exhibit. There were sections of Nascar in the movies [Even Disney's Cars], race simulator, pit crew exhibits with a chance to change tires, and the hall of fame members statues with their cars and videos.
There was an interactive display where Nascar's closest finishes were available to be put on the big screen TV by pressing a button
Overall the exhibits and interactive sections were well done and the history with the old cars was a kick. But, I believe the base for Nascar is blue collar - bring a cooler of beer and watch the race, crew. The fancy digs in the "hall of fame" and locating it down town in the convention center with expensive parking, seems inconsistent with the people that buy tickets. Also the hall's content did not seem to me to be the stuff people would come back to time and again - especially with difficult expensive parking. An alternate would be the Charlotte Motor Speedway area with lots of parking and the potential for drop-ins from the multiple racing related events at the speedway.
Tomorrow I plan to visit the highly rated Hendricks and Penske shop areas where they build the race cars -- the shops are not down town. Each have tours or viewing platforms where daily racing operations and race car construction can be seen.
