Day 59 - Rain, Freedom, Sun, Freeport

Well today started with a little drizzle in Moncton, NB.  We packed up the trailer and headed for St Johns, NB and the southern direct route to Maine, USA.  We only made one wrong turn by the driver and navigator not paying close attention to the confusing road signs - that cost us about 10 miles - O'well.

We made it to the border - agreed not to sing the national anthem, so the boarder guards let us in.  We exchanged a stash of Canadian cash [reserve for Newfoundland]  for us money and headed across Maine.  We had decided not to reserve an RV spot for the night until we got into the US -[ phone costs a minimum of $1 a minute plus mystery access charges in Canada].  We discovered that many parts of rural Maine don't have cell coverage - so neither did we.  When we did get through our first two choices were booked up [it is Saturday after all].   We finally found a spot in Freeport [ home of many factory stores].  As we drove toward Freeport the sun came out and the temp got up to 87F but very little humidity.

While we were in Newfoundland we had a rock hit our windshield and lines are starting to run across.  So we called USAA and scheduled to have it fixed on Tuesday morning.  We will do laundry, fix trailer parts, watch the Brickyard 400 - NASCAR at Indianapolis - , visit the factory stores and look for light houses. 

The RV park is small and wooded - very quiet and cool - so the stay promises to be an enjoyable one.  We noted that as we crossed into Maine - the roads got smoother, and wider, the parking places are wider and the driving got a lots less hectic and easier.

There are some things the US does better than Canada-

1]When we go to a restroom and turn on the light if needed its inside the room -- un like the  washrooms in Canada where the switches are on the outside.

2]  when you go to a gas station the footing is concrete -- unlike the gas bars where most are gravel [as well as parking lots and side roads.]

3]  When driving we will not miss converting kilometer/per hour to Miles per hour and km to miles for distance,  grams to ounces , or meters to feet.

4]  Finding out the cost per gallon of gas:   First take the cost per liter, multiply by 4, then divide by 5, then multiply by the exchange rate--- -

5] to find the Miles per gallon - do the above plus convert the KM to miles and divide by the gallons and adjust for the -- O'heck just cross the boarder to Maine and it is all simple again.
