Where I stayed

It was my last night in Heraklion and I couldn't just stay in, I went out for a bite to eat then went in search of some nightlife! I went to one bar and sat for a while, ordered some wine and the bartender then later filled it up again and didn't charge me, score! Went on to a couple more places along the same road and in the last one I hung out with some locals and it was someones birthday shots are going around and my glass gets filled again and yeah to sum it up I wasn't feeling to hot!! No idea what time i got to bed but 7 am came real soon when the alarm rang and it was time to get up to catch my ferry. It was a bout a 40 minute walk with the monster pack on and taking itty bitty baby steps. I was already feeling pretty queezy and the rocking and sloshing around on the boat was making it incredibly worse!! I was in the bathroom in a matter of minutes, and soon enough the employees were passing out barfbags and i took about 10 and used every one of them!!  There was nothing even to throw up, but about every 5 minutes after my stomach had time to produce more bile it was time to come up again! God it was aweful !!!  This went on for a bout 2 1/2 hours.  I wanted to kiss the ground when the boat docked and we arrived in Santorini!  There are a bunch of people that wait for the ferries to dock and then grab people and get them to rent a room from them. I spotted a guy holding a sign for Anna's Youth Hostel and was so greatful I didn't have to arrange transportation, they had a little bus to pick up people just arriving.  They let me just lay down in the backseat! Two other people came along, Erin and Connel both from Australia, the latter ending up being one my 4 roommates.  As much as I wanted to chat and be friendly, I just couldn't do it!  As soon as we got to the hostel I went straight to bed and had a lay down for a few hours.  I dragged myself up about 6pm to have a look around the town. We were staying in Perissa Beach, about 20 minutes from Fira, the port/capital.  It's much cheaper here and a few minutes walk to the beach.  The high season is over now, so there aren't many people, but I've heard this is a big party place.
I was walking along the shops by the beach and a guy is standing outside one and I said hey I know those tatoos!! It was Jay and Carla from Reythmon! I knew they were coming to Santorino but figured they had left by now.  Mel and Alana were also here so that was a cool surprise too! I didn't expect to see them until Thailand or Oz!
I hung out with all of them that night, but as they got smashed I just observed haha.  We sat at the bar across from the hostel and I had a potato for dinner, that was about all i could manage. They tried to get me to drink a beer to feel better, but after a few sips i was done.  Carla and Jay had their own private room down the road with a little balcony and swimmng pool, sweet deal!  So they got a bunch of drinks and snacks and we just sat out on the balcony messin around for awhile.  They went off to one of the bars around 12:30 and I walked Alana back to her dorm and tucked her into bed. It was a wierd night, usually I'm the one who needs babysitting!  I wanted to be 100 percent for the next day though as I had booked a full day tour that they had been raving about.
I spotted Erin in the morning and talked her into doing the tour as well so I had some company.  We boarded an old wooden pirate ship kinding looking vessel and set off around 11 and went to a volcano, now when you picture a volcano you picture red hot smoking lava, but this wasn't the case. It was like a big hilly mountain of black sand and rock, but had some nice views.  Big hike #1.  Next stop was Therissa, one of the islands that make up Santorini. This island was once one big volcano that erupted and the middle of it caved it, so the towns are built all around the top. To get up to the top you have to climb this massive walk thinking you could possibly die on the way up, it goes on and on and you just drip with sweat!! The only other option is to take a donkey but i couldn't subject the poor animal to carry me up that hill!  So we hoofed it and were expecting the most amazing city we've scene in our lives but were sadley dissapointed , there wasn't much up there!  Only a resturant and so we ate there, the food was precooked and just warmed up, but it was really really good. We had stuffed tomato's and eggplant!  No idea what they are called in Greek though.
Back on the boat for a while, the sea was nice and smooth and we went slow, I don't think anyone got sick.  The last stop was Ia, and it was another insane hike to the top, but we made it!! This place is supose to have the best view of the sunset of the entire island, so I think every single tourist on the island gathers there everynight to watch it. We had to fight for a spot to get some good photos!  It was beautiful of course, but the one I saw in Hania had it beat! Erin and I had a really good day, but we couldn't wait to get home for a shower and get some dinner.  We picked up Connel and went to a place along the beach where they had eaten the night before, Erin got rabbit stew and I tried not to imagine cute little bunny rabbits hopping around!  She is 20, from Melbourne, but her father has a farm so she's used to eating different animals i guess!   After dinner we went to one of the bars that we saw a flyer for and met up with Mel and Alana and a couple of guys they had met 2 more Aussies Darren and Jim.  It was a quiet night, not too many people out. We had one drink at that place and then went to another on the beach, more people there but playing rave type of annoying music.  We had enough for the night and went in for bed around 1.
This morning I met up with Alana, Mel and Darren and we had English breakfasts at the bar across the street. Darren , Erin and I then caught a bus into Fira to wander around that town for a couple of hours, grabbed some gyro's and gelati and enjoyed another fantastic view.
We also got a bus down to the Red beach, a pretty rocky climb to get to but it was very pretty, clear water where you can see your feet at the bottem and open your eyes.
I'm going to Naxos tommorow. I'm feeling rushed as I only have about 10 more days for the islands, and there are sooo many of them here , I wish I had more time.  I could change my flights but I still need sufficiant time in South Africa and my friend Kate is waiting for me to get to Perth so we can start our travels in Asia!  So I guess I will have to come back to the islands again another time, so many places to see and just not enough time in one life!
