After chilled out Lencois, we drove on to Brasilīs party capital and centre of Afro-Brasilian culture: the City of Salvador. What a great place! We were only supposed to stay for 3 nights and ended up staying 6, as the huge Sao Joao fiesta was on.
So, what did we get up to in Salvador???

Well, Kerry and I went to a Capoeira lesson on a deserted beach with a guy called Fabio. Capoeria is a circular form of afro-brasilian martial arts & dancing (the guys dressed in red and white, swinging their legs over each other on the top of a building in one of BBC1īs link videos are doing capoeira). Fabio proceeded to hang around with us for the rest of our time in Salvador, showing us Capoeira displays, introducing us to all of his sleezy friends, and taking us to dodgy bars around the city! He also got quite friendly with one member of our group, but Iīm not mentioning any names!

We also saw LOADS of Oludum drummers out in the streets, which was fantastic! One night, there was this group called Swing Do Pele and they played constantly for about 3 hours. 2 of the guys in the group with the biggest drums, were amazing - constantly lifting their drums up one handed, or lying on the floor, and still not missing a beat!

During the fiesta itself there were 5 stages dotted around the city, with live bands playing īforrorī music. Kerry and I ended up forror dancing with lots of different people: it was kind of like country dancing brasil style - very funny! īm sure at one point we were doind the hokey cokey, followed by the lambada! There were also loads of people dressed up in traditional costume doing forror dancing properly. Each dance group always included one girl dressed as a bride - this was something to do with the Sao Joao fiesta, although Iīm not sure what!

Salvador is a really vibrant city, but also very poor. Itīs great to party, but so many people are out on the street trying to sell you jewellry, grilled cheese, or just begging, that eventually the hassling gets too much and you just have to get out. So after 6 crazy days we left for the beaches further down the coast.
