January 2nd, 2008 was an early and exciting morning for our group. At 7:30 a.m., we loaded into our trusty twelve-passenger van and departed for Milford Sound. Upon arriving at the sound, we squeezed into thermal wear and boarded tandem kayaks for an adventure into this awesome Fjord. We were forced to split into two smaller groups, but in the end, this played out to our benefit, as each of the groups returned with very different stories. Eight of us had the privige of paddling under a waterfall roughly 165m in height, while the other four engaged in a slightly shorter but arguably more scenic mini-trip. The latter group paddled amoung wild dolphins and was able to get within mere feet of several sun-bathing seals. One interesting portion of the paddle for both groups involved binding our boats together and collectively raising a large sail to take advantage of the high winds coming in from the sea. The waves grew as the day went on, and happily, none of our six boats capsized during the day
After arriving back in camp with sore arms and backs, many of us took advantage of the sun we found inland by taking a short nap on the fine grassy plains of this area. At around 7:00 p.m., we found ourselves rested, and decided to take a short journey up to a waterfall that a few of us had explored the previous day. As we tramped (hiked), the weater became cloudy, which allowed us to take in the true colors of the trees and plant life on our way up. The waterfall was just as spectacular as the day before, and by climbing a bit, we were able to get a view of another falls above it; reassuring us that in this land, we are very small indeed.
We are anxious to share all of our photos with you when we return!
