We love Wednesday's kicks off as Medellin's fledgling club night for internationals to mix with locals. It's designed to fill a void that is missing in this city and one I would have been thankful for a few weeks back. Since I can't speak a word of Spanish (yet), I always gravitate to gringo(a) nights out to get my bearings. There is certainly a gap in the market for that here. Give it a few months, and its should be up there with one of the best nights out in the week. The first night there was always going to be teething problems.
It's a little on the quiet side. By quiet I mean me. Actually that's not strictly true and it does enjoy some custom as the night wares on. There's a number of things I would change in order for the night to be a success. I discover this after a visit to drop the kids off in the little boys room.
As is often the way here, or so I've discovered, is that there are no toilets in the men's washrooms, only urinals. Whether this is to combat sneaking into the john for a line of coke I don't know, but it does pose a problem if you need a number two. Naturally I venture into the ladies. Upon completing my business, I'm surprised to see the bartender waiting for me outside the door. Here he decides to give me a serious ticking off for using the girls bathroom. I explain it needed to happen, whereupon he counters that I should have gone home. 10,000 COP entry for guys, free for girls, and we need to go home if we want a shit. Sexism is rife in Medellin.
It was a minor issue of what turned out to be another good night with friends, resulting in Hana deciding to sit on my knee and stroke my hair for much longer than last time. I edge ever closer. She repeatedly asks me if I still have my private room, to which of course I'm totally gutted to say I gave it up yesterday. Such is my luck. Not that anything would have happened, but it would be nice to have the option of a cuddle. Of course from there anything can happen behind closed doors. I stress there is nothing sinister intended...
I could go on to talk about more drunken debauchery, getting flashed, watching Battle Royale alone at 9am and other such interesting occurrences, but I've said too much already. One of these day's this blog will get me in serious trouble. I've already been threatened with a lawsuit for slander, but for now I'm happy to ride my luck and hope people have a sense of humour and an open mind. When I come to re-write, edit and hopefully publish, the gloves will come off and the truth will out. At least then I can go into hiding.
