Fethiye
Entry 33 of 44 | show all | print this entry |
Yesterday morning I got up and was supposed to rock climb with a group of 4 brits whom I met. We got to the climbing shop and just as we stepped in it began to drizzle rain... it's been really rather unsettled for the past couple of days.
Anyhow, we couldn't climb. They were planning to take off to Fethiye after climbing, so just decided to head there right away. I'd been hanging at Olympos for five days and the rain was beginning to wear my spirits down. The thought of packing up my stuff was enough to tire me out. I figured this was a signal that it was time for me to move on as well. I packed my stuff up in 20 minutes and was off with them. I also figured it'd be good to hook up with some other people for a few days to enjoy the company while I had the chance.
I'd actually planned to make a stop in Kas to do a sea kayak trip over top of a sunken city, but once again, it's too early in the season and these are not running. Actually, it was apparent to me from only a couple of days after entering Turkey that I'd likely have to make a return trip (Trabzon, my mountain hiking area is too full of snow... Nemrut is still under some snow and tours are not in full swing for another month... I want to come back to Olympos with some climbing gear and a partner!) It's a month too early. I was almost ready to just head for Istanbul and catch my flight home, but it's a bit of a battle... Should I save all the sights until the next trip? Should I do the highlights now as we often say we'll return to a place we like, but who knows?
I decided I'd better hit some of the main spots that I can get to now and at least finish my coastal route...
So, I'm in Fethiye... did a great day trip hike today in a barn-burner of a clear-sky day through an old ghost town, over a mountain top and down into the blue lagoon of Oludeniz, one of the most picturesque beach areas in Turkey and had a grrrreat dinner, so my spirits are on the rise... http://images.google.com.tr/imgres?imgurl=http://www.math.umn.edu/~alayont/turkiye/ege/oludeniz2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.math.umn.edu/~alayont/turkiye/ege/oludeniz2.html&h=470&w=757&sz=73&hl=tr&start=20&um=1&tbnid=0JXgxE4lvK3D2M:&tbnh=88&tbnw=142&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doludeniz%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dtr%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3DSnm%26sa%3DG http://images.google.com.tr/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nerededir.com/resim/oludeniz2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.oludeniz.nerededir.com/&h=320&w=440&sz=51&hl=tr&start=16&um=1&tbnid=zrvYRi4kL14WhM:&tbnh=92&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doludeniz%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dtr%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3DSnm%26sa%3DG
I intended to hike up this fantasic Salkilent Gorge tomorrow - full of water, 18km long... great adventure... but, well, you know... it's too early in the season and the water is too high... next time. http://www.hitit.co.uk/tosee/Saklikent/Index.html
