Olympos
Entry 30 of 44 | show all | print this entry |
Usually on every trip, one finds a place or two which are really special. Places where you feel like you could stay days, a week, a month, or more. For me, these are places like Pai in northern Thailand and Hampi in India.
Athough I've only just arrived, I'm feeling that Olympos could be one of those places. I wasn't certain what to expect becuase my research on the internet seemed to suggest all kinds of conflicting opinions. Some people report that they hated it and it was the low point of their travels in Turkey, while others say it's the best place ever.
It can be the backpacker party place of the country, but as of now it's still very early in the season so it's quite quiet... there are less than 20 people right now. In high season they fill over 300 beds - just where I'm staying. There are about half dozen other places, although most are quite a bit small. But as you can imagine, it all results in quite a massive party come warm weather in May...
Olympos is nestled in a valley and surrounded by mountains on both sides. These cliff faces have all kinds of bolted routes for climbing. Down the road about 5 minutes are the ruins of ancient Olympus, and 10 minutes further on is the sea.
I'm staying in a bungalow, which really has to be the best built, best maintained, and cleanest place I've stayed for the ENTIRE trip... yes, better than any hotel room. Sounds strange, I know, but this place is really well thought out. It's made to look like a rustic wooden shack on the outside, but you open the door and the inside is really quite stunning. I spent an hour before bed last night just laying there admiring the inside of my bungalow! It has AC, on demand heated water, key controlled lights so you can't waste energy by leaving them on when you leave and even a blow dryer.

Outside at night, no lights stay on to converve energy, however, the second you step outside to walk anywhere motion detecting lights turn on ahead of you and then go out after you pass by...
Breakfast and dinner, and all hot drinks included for 20 Lira... this is about 16 CAD
Anyhow... really cool place, more to come soon as I think I'll hang here for a few days... I've got some good hiking to do a some ruins to see over the next few days.
