Palmyra is touted as having some of the premier ruins of Syria. I somehow wasn't impressed, though. It's certainly quite an enormous site in terms of how much ground it covers, but it's in such a state of ruin that one is left for the most part to try and imagine what it once was. Plus I've seen a LOT of ruins in my time. Maybe my ability to appreciate ruins has been ruined ;-)
