Madness at Madaba
Entry 16 of 44 | show all | print this entry |
I've now made my way further north to the tiny town of Madaba. It's famous for it's buildings with old tile mosaics, and also nearby Mt. Nebo where Mose's apparently first laid eyes on the Promised Land.
There's no public transport out to Nebo, so I just started walking that direction and when I got to the edge of town where I knew cars were going my way and then tried to flag one down to hitch a ride. In fact, the first guy stopped. A guy in a big truck that way rusting to pieces. Anyhow, I got to Nebo and it was super windy. They say Moses died on Nebo after seeing the Promised Land, but his actual resting place is uncertain. I'm thinking that if he was an old and fraile 120 years old, as written, he likely blew off the mountain somewhere, as I was having a tough time staying put myself.
Anyhow, hitching back was somewhat more of a problem, but an Italian guy finally stopped. Ironically, he's been working on restoring a lot of the mosaics around Jordan and Syria.
My hotel here is wierd. The lights for the bathroom are located in the room next to me so I have to ask the people in it to leave the bathroom light on so I don't pee all over the floor in the middle of the night. The shower room light's aren't even working, so they've rigged a alternate light at one end of the room under the sink. Problem is that the room is about 20-25 feet long with the shower at the opposite end of the light, so it's pretty tough to see. Oh, well, there's no hot water unless you ask anyhow. They turn on the boiler if you request it, and 2 hours later you have a hot shower in the dark.
Oh, and the shower and all the toilets have these nice sliding glass doors.... none of which slide.
