One of the many benefits of Scuola Leonardo Da Vinci is the extra-curricular activities organized by them. Each week they offer 2 afternoons with Serena, a great guide and historian.  These are generally free and involve walking within Siena, but the school also organizes trips away once a week, at a cost.

That's how I ended up meeting some great people on my first Friday at the school.  Cheers to Marieke, from Holland, Anita from Switzerland, and Voltolt (probably spelled wrongly) from Austria.  Some very interesting conversations on the trip to and from Volterra,  with some sentences being in at least 4 languages.. a real language stew but good fun.

Volterra is a pretty little place, with great views, an old Roman amphitheatre, and the usual assortment of picturesque corners and steep streets.  Our time there was very limited which is a shame, but we had enough time to sample the gelato and also cecina, which is like a chick-pea pizza without the pizza base – more like a gigantic crepe I guess.  Very tasty.

Volterra has escaped some of the tourist crowds that flock to nearby San Gimignano – thanks in part, apparently, to the Psychiatric Hospital which is based there. Sometimes it pays to be mad it seems.

Unfortunately, Voltolt left the next day, Marieke on the Sunday, and even Anita deserted me a week later but not before we had the chance to sample some of the local wines and foods.  Whoever thought someone would make a nutella and marscapone pizza… delicious!

Be prepared to become a little blasť about the panoramic views that greet you around every corner.

great time to be in Italy with the Euro fetching over 60 AUD cents.... still I guess it doesn't help that much when a meal is still 15 Euros!

Missing Italy already... have fun.
