Flag of Fiji  , Yasawa Islands,

We took a boat from Nadi, Fiji to Octopus Resort on Waya Island in the Yasawa Island chain just NW of the main island of Fiji.  It took about an hour to get there going full force the entire way.  It was a beautiful ride, small islands all around.  Once we made it to the resort, we were greeted by the staff singing their welcome song.  BULA everyone yelled- Hello and welcome!  We hopped off the boat and into the water- ready to wrap up in their warm smiles and kind eyes.  We shook each staff members hand, then were off to get acclimated to the resort.  We were in Bungalow 1, which was small yet wonderful.  1 bed with a mosquito net and fan, 1 dresser, 2 bedside tables and a colorful locally made rug.  Simplicity at its best.  Windows covered the walls with a screen and wooden blinds, all open to feel the ocean breeze.
The resort was small and had a diverse group of travelers.  Backpackers to families, it was ever changing.  The food was amazing and the snorkeling was by far the most beautiful we have yet to see.  10 meters into the water and you were in another world.  We snorkeled 2 to 3 times a day- each swim different than the one before.  Majestic really.  We didn't have an underwater camera, but it wouldn't have done it justice anyway.  It was something one just needs to see themselves.  Soo....  if anyone is up for a trip to Fiji I highly recommend staying at the Octopus Resort (and taking us along!)
We met many people the 5 days we were there, all traveling for their winter holiday.  Their seasons are just opposite of ours so we are traveling during Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand's winter/ spring season.  It is nice because it is not crowded, and the temperature is perfect, 70's- 80's.  They also call any vacation a holiday, weather it is a few days to many months; and most people are traveling weeks to months at a time.  It is apparently not uncommon in most countries to travel for months at a time.  They were always amazed at America's normal 2 week vacation per year.  We learned that most New Zealander's go on a "OE" after high school, which is an overseas experience.  This is a working holiday that lasts at least one year and may extend to many years before going back to Uni (which is their term for college or university.)  Pretty crazy huh?  See folks our excursion is really just a mini holiday to most of the world :)
