Next stop Pulau Kapas. I got the speedboat over along with a group of day tripping chinese tourists who posed for more peace sign photos than i care to remember, having spent the previous night in a drunken stupor and decided that breakfast should consist of milk and noodles (what! why! ....i dont even...) Well yeah anyway surprised i didnt puke, just on held on to t'side and watched the hour or so journey whittle down, as the island of pulau kapas drew nearer and nearer.
Im at a total loss as to why this island is not more popular amongst tourists, aside from the fact that the coral isnt so good here which may put off scuba divers and all them lot, the water is crystal clear, the beach backs onto the jungle giving you a great contrast between wildlife and fun in the sun....and yet when i arrived there was a small expensive resort and a longhouse which catered for backpackers which was entirely empty! I had an entire beach, complete with sunloungers, snorkelling gear and all that jazz, TO MY SELF!
To put it into prospective the owner of the longhouse bustled out across the sand out of breath gasping "i saaaw, the boat?!?! how did you find us?!?!".....this place truly caters to people wanting to get away from it all and those prepared to do a little research to find a more natural beach resort.
Most days involved me running up and down the white sandy coast doing cartwheeling and shouting YEEEES ALLLLL MINE HAHAHAHA....ok so not literally but you get the picture. Luckily i wasnt too short of company as on day 3 a group of divers came ashore, consisting of a mix of malaysian divemasters and a couple of tourists who were learning just off the coast.
For the rest of the week i had an absolute blinder and made some friends for life in the "pirate bar" which was constructed alongside the longhouse (which is was elovated on stilts), we celebrated another birthday, we celebrated the end of ramadan....we celebrated...celebrating! Whenever we ran out of beer (usually every morning) You'd hear a thunderous cry from one of the divers called AKKY consisting of "MAAAAANN DOWN, MAAAAN DOWN!!!".
The first time this happened i thought someone was dying and promptly pegged it (baywatch style tits bouncing) along the beach to find him almost crying into the freezer, no carlsberg makes Akky a very sad chappy, and so we'd go across to shore in his little speedboat the mini mart (who funnily enough knew them all by name and had the crates at the ready) whereby we'd load up on beer and go back to the harbour.
Just typing this up now has given me a great big cheshire cat grin across my mug. I hope i can go back one day, its got to have been one of the many highlights of my trip so far...!
