and we're off!
after a morning of last minute preparations while the others attended the church service, and the team's first ride (and likely only) ride together to the puget sound, there was a nice picnic hosted by my parents and a wheel dipping ceremony. everyone put their back tire in the water, and we'll eventually dip our front tires into the atlantic when we finally finish the trip.
our first ride was an easy one. we snaked around and over the sound to get ourselves inland. because we have a range of ages and physical strength on the trip, we ride on the buddy system. we're paired into groups of two, and we never should get so far away from one another that we can't help our buddy should trouble befall. i got paired up with dan--a college friend of brad and julie's. he's a really strong cyclist, so i had to push myself to keep up from time to time. since the fun part of cycling is speeding along, though, i don't see it as too much of a problem! we arrived first into camp setting what will probably be a trend for the rest of the trip.
the scenery was gorgeous. the cascades were looming in the distance and reminding us that we'd have to start climbing them in a scant two days' time. at times, i was reminded of switzerland when passing green meadows full of cows out to pasture with the mountains raising majestically in the distance.
sedro wooley is a pretty quiet town... we were able to find free wifi right off the bat, emanating from a hotel across the street. conveniently, there was a sports bar next to the hotel, and brad, dan, julie, and i got our internet fix while eating an enormous cookie sundae. burning so many calories every day is a convenient excuse for eating tons of decadent food. woohoo!
