once in anacortes, i finally began to meet the people who i'd been trading emails with for the last few months. i'd seen their pictures and bios on the esperanza ride site, so i could recognize a couple folks. luckily, everyone seems to be pretty cool. i'm sure there are going to be personality conflicts along the way, but for the most part everyone seems easy-going and fun. fortunately, there are two other heathens, so we can keep each other company if there are church services or any other events with a strong christian bent. i was a little worried that i would be the only one, but when i walked up on the other two in the parking lot during the morning's service, we immediately were relieved to see each other avoiding the ceremony.

there is an interesting age split in the team. there are five us in our 20s, the next youngest is late 40s, there are two in their 50s, and one couple (riding a tandem no less!) that are going to celebrate their 60th birthday on the trip. i finally had a flash of insight and realized that we were lacking representation in the middle probably because many people that age are busy with kids, mortgages, stable jobs, and all those other things that keep people from doing silly things like riding coast to coast. at least for the people on the trip (the woman in her 40s is here with her daughter) their kids are old enough to look after themselves.

velva, brad's 82 year old aunt driving the support van, is an absolute character. after giving me a big hug, she announced, "honey...i was born with itchy feet, and i've never been able to stop moving around." because of that, we were having trouble locating her the day before, but she showed up just in time for the team meeting. just a few months ago, apparently, she up and drove from southern california to illinois to visit a friend. i'm looking forward to hearing some of her stories and seeing some of the antics she gets up to.

rather than describe everyone now, i'll try to sprinkle it in during later entries... keep things interesting (and minimize the amount of typing i have to do now). go team!
