upon arrival in seattle, it was immediately apparent that i was in fact going to ride a bicycle from one side of the country to the other. before lugging my backpack and bike through seatac airport, arriving at the bellevue hilton to meet some of the group and finding them doing bike maintenance in the parking lot, or running around doing all the last minute preparations with my sister and family, it hadn't really sunk in. true, i had been on my bike "a lot" (a lot for normal people...not compared to the 5+ hours i'd be doing in the saddle once the ride got going). true, i had been training with the intention of riding 3,800 miles. true, i had been thinking of hardly anything but the trip for nearly a month (and off and on for the last six). but somehow it didn't seem real until we all started descending on the seattle area.

once again, i seemed to have brought the beautiful weather to washington. i'm beginning to think that washingtonians tell lies about the weather to all us californians to keep us from moving north. unfortunately, i didn't get to see much more of seattle than i'd seen on previous short visits. my parents took julie and i out to a really nice dinner near the public market before we headed back to the hotel to meet other members of the group and to crash. the next morning we had a nice breakfast at a place called the pancake corral, we did some errands, and finally drove to anacortes to meet the team. the preparations reached a bit of a frantic pace as we hit the home depot, the bank of america, costco, etc, but we managed to get it all done and only be one hour late for the team meeting. and so it begins...
