The Brazilian girl Kathrine in our dorm had somehow convinced Fintan to do the Canyon Swing over Skippers Canyon this afternoon. Steve was booked in to get his tattoo and I had booked my Bungy jump for the morning. I had to get up first and head down to the bungy centre to get my bus out to the bungy site. There was 18 jumpers on board all as scared as the next. After a 40 min drive we took a right turn off the road and headed up a steep dusty dirt track up to the site of the highest bungy jump in the southern hemisphere. A shit inducing 134m above the Nevis Canyon.
When we arrived we were fitted into our harnesses. The brochure for the jump states that peoples first words when they see this jump are usually an expletive and its true. Its fucking scary and its really fucking high. Its a high wire bungy which basically means your jumping from a cable car suspended over the canyon.
Theres a viewing area where you can see people jump and towards the end of their jump, you're unable to see them and its like waiting for an eternity for them to bounce back up. We got out to the pod in a kind of trolley thingy and I was 4th on the list. The advice given to us was to take a giant leap out, like diving into a pool. Standing at the edge of that platform, its like everything inside you and your whole being is telling you this isn't right. The river seems about 2 miles down and I admit I was shitting it. The countdown came, I closed my eyes and just went for it. Anxiousness then turns to elation as you're freefalling for a fall 8.5 seconds. The ground rush is unbelievable and just as you think you're gonna hit the ground you're yanked back up to do it all again. What a feeling!! Remember me saying the bungy in Taupo was not that great, well this is what I was looking for.
When I got back to Q'town, i headed down to the tattoo parlour where I was amazed to see Fintan. He hadn't gone on the Canyon swing afterall. Steve's tattoo was nearly finished and it looked amazing. Its a Maori symbol of no particular meaning on the back of his calf. The detail was fantastic.
I was wrecked so i went to bed for an hour before being woken up by the new guests in the dorm - a Swedish guy and 2 dutch guys. The usual small talk chit chat between back packers ensued and then we went out for dinner. If anybody ever goes to Queenstown, make sure you go to Fergburger. The best burger I have ever had. Feckin huge boys, don't know how we finished them. Andy in our dorm from Belfast works in a bar beside the ice bar and he got us in at a discount. The whole bar is made of ice, the walls, the seats and even the glasses are made of ice and theres lots of cool ice sculptures as well. You only stay in there for 30 mins cos its -5 degrees. We went back to the hostel and had a few beers until around 1 at which stage the boring Dutch boys wanted to go to bed. e went to the bar downstairs where everyone was just off their trees. The place was just bursting with huge egoed metrosexuals and the music was shit so didn't really enjoy it. Played a few games of pool and headed back to the room. Wish I could have spent our last night in Queenstown doing something a little wilder but it wasn't to be I'm afraid.
