Where I stayed
Mew Lake

We left the hospitality of Laurie and Chris’ in Pembroke and
continued on our adventure. The next stop was Algonquin Park. This provincial
park is an oasis of nature and wildlife. There is a great balance between the
elements and mankind that is very relaxing. Since we are arriving at the end of
peak season most park services are closed for the year and there is really not
many people visiting, which works out great for us!

We stayed at the best campground in the park called “Mew Lake.”
It was a great spot right on the lake which was full of ducks and loons. Our
site was perfect with a nice view onto Mew Lake and colourful sunsets on the
other side. The weather in Algonquin Park was a little less cooperative though
with temperatures dipping to around 5 C at night.

On our second day we went to Canoe Lake to rent a
lightweight Aluminum canoe and all the rest of the canoe equipment from the
Outfitter’s store. Our plan was to canoe our way to Little Joe Lake and back,
which would take most of the day. I wanted Therese to see the resort that I
work at in 2001 on Little Joe Lake called Arohon Pines.  I worked there for the summer season which
lasted for 5 months and had a lot of good times. Unfortunately the skies opened
up and started to rain and the wind picked up quite a bit about a quarter of
the way there. We found a tiny island with a really nice house on it as well as
four small cabins. We had a little lunch and waited out the rains for while on
this tiny island refuge. The rains tapered off a bit but the skies still looked
as if it could start to rain again at any moment. We returned to Outfitter’s
store and decided to just drive to Arohon Pines instead.

All in all it was a great visit to one of Canada’s best
provincial parks!
