Colombia and South America was going to be hard to live up to, our mission for the next month was to travel through all Central America in a month so we just had to chose one or two places in each country and spend quite a bit of time in Guatemala and Mexico to check out the Mayan ruins....so we set aside 2 days for Panama, so we decided to check out the highlight of Panama, yes the Panama Canal...
The canal is located just outside Panama City, it was pretty enough to walk around but a bit too Americanised for our liking, Mc Donalds and Dennys on every corner, high rise buildings, the old part of the city is the main attraction, crumbling buildings and where the true locals hang..
So time to check out this famous canal that connects the Carribean sea to the Pacific...now i know it was an engineering marvel when opened on 1914 and it was impressive to watch the locks draining all their water so the huge cargo ships could pass through but again it was a boys thing even though Stephen didnt seem to appreciate it that much...maybe because it took us 2 hrs to find the bus that would take us to the canal.... the more astonishing thing is the price the cargo ships...one big ship in 2008 paid $317.000.... while one crazy American swam the 14km for only 0.36 cents in 1928... no time to spare to time to move to Costa Rica...x x
