Our tour guide arrives to our hotel at 8am to inform us the stike has begun, the miners have blocked the highway, given the fact there is only one road that connects all the coastal roads of Peru this is a problem. We are told strikes normally only last 24hrs but as the day goes on the rumours are it will last for 3 days, we decide to retreat to the terrace of the hotel, sit back, relax and listen to the madness outside.
Few hours later we are beginning to worry we will be stuck in this town for a few days but thankfully at 8pm that night all is resolved after they smashed a few car windows in that tried to mass the picket line, the miners are happy with the offering from the government.
Of course we have dinner to celebrate..
Next morning on the road again at 8am.. its been a long time since a sleep in..
Ok we lie, our tour guide arrives an hour and a half late.. a man in the hotel rings him to give out to him that its is not fair to leave tourists waiting... our tour guide hangs up on him and arrives in a pissed off mood to say the least.
Arrive at Nazca airport to get the overfligfht of the Nazca lines. These lines in the dessert stretch for 50km and as alyways many theories exist to how these lines appeared. Widely believed it was the Nacza culture that existed from 700BC TO 200BC, but why would these people spend so much time removing pebbles from the sand to create these lines, some say it was so the religious gods could see them, i reckon people just had too much time on their hands back then and this was their entertainment.....
The lines are preserved to this day as the climate is so dry and windless here..
Getting very scared when we get to our plane, the smallest plane ever, 5 passengers, holding onto each other for dear life, get in the air and my stomach is doing somersault, trying to view the lines below and trying to stop getting sick at the same time is a difficult job.
35 minutes and all is over but one unforgettable journey and still mind boggling how these shapes of a hummingbird, monkey, astronaut, spider, shark etc got here and more importantly why.
Then in the afternoon we take a tour to see the tombs of the Nazca culture, these mummies, bones and skeletons go back over 2000 years, freaky and eerie to say the least...
Unlike the Incas, the Nasca people sacrificed people but mostly babies... strange especially as you can view a baby mummy without its head as they slit their throats and just kept the body and we think we had it tough as kids..
Overall Nazca very interesting place with a lot of history and a pretty cool place to hang around.
Now its time to check out Cusco and the Inca culture.
