The Road Less Taken:

Well i always remember a poem from my first year in secondary school... the road less taken by Robert Frost so thats what we decided to do: so hereīs how it goes.

After finishing our trekking in El Chalten in Argentina it was time to move on and relax... so we decide lets check out Chile... most of the other people on the bus were heading to the lake district in Argentina so 12 hours later on the bus we met an Aussie couple, an Israeli and 2 Dutch girls that are getting off at the same town as us and going to try and make their way through some of Chile, the only problem was we were all clueless about how to go about this mission.... it turned out to be Mission Impossible.

Well the 12 hr bus journey was an adventure in itself.. it is called the Ruta 40... the Dubliners should release another song about this... the rocky road to the Chilean border...crazy road... wilderness does not even describe this place... one of the restaurants we stopped at was called "The Siberia"... that just about explains this the way this was the only stop and no toilet on the bus...
Ruta 40... rocky road to Chile

Anways finally get to our destination and go for a beer with our new found friends... they all seem to be clinging onto me even more as i can speak to the locals... not that it helped...we were told 6 different times for one bus to get us over the Chilean border.
Smily but confused travellers.

Next morning we are all stranded on the street trying to figure out how to get to the border... first the guards take all our details and seemingly it is aganist the law here to loiter in the streets in a group of people... finally this guy with a mini bus van offers us a lift to the town on the Chilean side of the border... after he did his daily shopping first... 2 hrs later we are at the border.... Chilean border control is crazy.. they search all your bags and the bus for food... one girl got fined $150 for trying to smuggle an apple into Chile... yes an apple...

So we get to the border town called Chile Chico and we decide to break up the group.. so the Dutch girls and us decide to get a bus and boat combination to a little city called Coyhaique.. the scenery was pretty cool until we got to Coyhaique...
Chile at last.. Chile ChicoBoat to mainland

10PM at night.. pissing out of the heavens.. trying to find a place to stay.. everyone was so unfriendly... they obviously had rooms available... but just didnt want to give them to us... didnt help that we set off a car alarm that could be hears throughout the neighbourhood.

11pm still nowhere to stay... then we spot a place... yeah they want to take us in.. looks like a bit of a kip but hey it will do...
Midnight: is that dirt on the wall.... no its earwigs... go to the bathroom.. place covered in earwigs... look in bed... more earwigs... disgusting to say the least

1am: pack up our bags and find a hotel... shower... feeling a little better.

10am: back to our shithole hostel to try and get our money back... little Chilean lady doesnt understand my Spanish of earwigs and bugs... demand our money back... finally get our way... but she argues that earwigs are normal around here..

Not liking Chile so far... people not as friendly as the Argentinians... decide we have to get out of this shithole city and prove all of Chile canīt be like this..
Where to next... need to leave Coyhaique quickly.

So guess this blog reports our first bad experience.... just trying to make you all feel better and not so jealous.... but we look back at it now and laugh...

Read on to our next blog for our next adventure of hitch hiking 500km through the most remote part of Chile.
