Carretera Austral: Chile

So we finally get out of Coyhaique Chile, decide to make our way up the "carretera austral"... this road began construcion 30 years ago to connect southern Chile with the rest of the country... you just wouldnt believe how isolated this place is.. we soon found out.

Puerto Puyuhuapi:

So we managed to get our final bus (of course we didnt realise it at the time) to a little port town called Puerto Puyuhuapi, four Germans decided to settle here in 1935 in the middle of this remote rainforest place, thought it would be worth a look, really cute town with really nice surroundings but not much to do here only think... most of the restaurants in people´s sheds or living rooms.. no such thing as a menu... normally just 2 choices... just like an Irish wedding... beef or salmon... and maybe rice to go with it if you lucky.

not much here only shadows...Best salmon in town.. Puerto puyuhuapiSteve happy in isolation..

So next day decide to enquire about buses to next town... hhhmmm 4 days to wait for a bus.. thats if it comes at all.... only one option... get the markers out... we have to hitch hike...

La Junta
next day already to go... sign made for nearest town La Junta.... about 2 hrs away.... ok there is one problem... no cars are passing us... average 1 car per hour... most of them construction workers....
3 hrs later some nice Chileans pick us up and we arrive in La Junta... on the craziest road... so bumpy... i imagine they will be the next 50 years trying to pave all this road...
Thumbing to La Junta, Chile3hrs later.. La Junta please

Ask about buses in La Junta... they laugh at us... we realise we are going to have to thumb the next 400km to the Argentinan border...

4 days of Hitchhiking:

So next 4 days consist of getting up early... waiting for cars on bogger roads... playing games like hit the other stone, eye spy, count the cows, kicking stones of the road, thinking, more thinking, praying and more praying, some of the towns we got off in looked very uninviting....
Snooze time
Anyone out there3hrs waiting for a car... Comfy ride...

Finally we make it to the Argentinan border in Palena.... have to walk 5km in sun with our rucksacks.. border control laugh at us when we ask about buses... recommend hitch hiking... we manage to hitch hike 200km to civilisation....

To sum it up, we have hitch hiked approx 500km, 8 different vehicules, car seat twice, sitting on petrol cans, tyres, in a cattle truck, sore asses at the end.

Lots of cool scenery...pristine lakes, woodlands, mountains, only met one other tourist on the way... was it worth it... defo something to remember...

Of course we had one huge steak again when we arrived in Esquel Argentina on Easter Sunday to celebrate....
