Arriving in Tallinn on the ferry from Stockholm early Wednesday morning, and with just over 24 hours until our flight to Vilnius, there was no time to loose. We had booked a hotel room in the photogenic old town, and after dropping off our tiny bags we set off exploring on foot. Being early December and mid-week we were surprised to see so many tourists, most of them fellow Scandinavians. So we were not alone to have discovered this part of the world after all. No wonder I guess with the amount of low cost daily flights from Scandinavia and the UK. The old town was booming with hip bars and restaurants and we spotted more than one newly rich zooming past in a posh car. Never having been to an old Soviet state, I am not sure what I expected, but must say I found it quite similar to back home in Norway. The price level was another tiny surprise, still kind of cheap but certainly nothing out of the ordinary.

We never left the old town itself but criss-crossed the beautiful touristy heart of Tallinn several times before deciding that enough was enough. Time for a bit to eat and a beer or two. Traveling with a gourmet like Alf Kåre, you just have to set aside time for some restaurant visits. In fact we managed to have two dinners that night, both restaurants turned out to serve us excellent food. We continued to a couple of hip bars before we ended the night at a touristy and popular disco.

24 hours to discover a city like Tallinn is not much, but unless you plan to spend a lot of time straying out of the old town, partying or shopping, it may actually just be perfect. Don't get me wrong, I found the old town of Tallinn very nice and I am sure you can spend a lot of time there, however with just 5 days on our hands and with two more capitals to go, 24 hours turned out to be superb travel planning. Vilnius next up...
