Uruguay is pretty cheap (although not as cheap as Argentina), so when my brother and I walk around looking for apartments that's up for sale, we are not totally sure what's going on. It's incredibly expensive to buy something here compared to for example B˙zios in Brazil, or Buenos Aires for that matter. For example, we see a house that's for rent for one month during January 2006 (that's summer and high season)
Another reason for visiting than seeking plenty of sun and beaches are the casinos. It's not exactly Vegas, but as close as it gets in Latin America. A good friend of mine was on a nine months backpacking trip around Latin America a few years ago, and he won something like US $10.000 on one of his casino visits in Punta del Este. Neither my brother and I would mind a similar experience, so since we only stayed during mid-week and outside the high season, we spent about as much time at the casino as at the beach.
I think the casino got back about the same as my friend "stole" from them a few years ago...
