My guide book says something like the following about Punta del Este; bring designer sunwear (fake ones will be sniggered at), skimpy bikinis/speedos, plenty of cash and party stamina. I guess that, for once, sums up the place perfectly (at least if you go on a weekend or during the high season). Punta del Este, the fashion capital of South America, is about six hours with boat and bus from Buenos Aires, and our last chance for a bit of sun and beaches before Christmas.

Uruguay is pretty cheap (although not as cheap as Argentina), so when my brother and I walk around looking for apartments that's up for sale, we are not totally sure what's going on. It's incredibly expensive to buy something here compared to for example B˙zios in Brazil, or Buenos Aires for that matter. For example, we see a house that's for rent for one month during January 2006 (that's summer and high season). The price is US $40.000 for one month. It's high season and a very nice house, but hey we're talking Uruguay here!!! Considering the relatively (that's very relative) short summer season, we are not sure who all the people are who both can afford and bother to buy property around Punta del Este. Well, I am sure there's plenty of people in Buenos Aires and Montevideo who got cash, and when you got cash I guess it's more about convenience and location than anything else. After all, Punta del Este seems like a very nice place, and is close enough to both Montevideo and Buenos Aires so you could go there on a long weekend.

Another reason for visiting than seeking plenty of sun and beaches are the casinos. It's not exactly Vegas, but as close as it gets in Latin America. A good friend of mine was on a nine months backpacking trip around Latin America a few years ago, and he won something like US $10.000 on one of his casino visits in Punta del Este. Neither my brother and I would mind a similar experience, so since we only stayed during mid-week and outside the high season, we spent about as much time at the casino as at the beach.

I think the casino got back about the same as my friend "stole" from them a few years ago...
