About a girl, the most gorgeous girl.

I'm at the main bus terminal in Asunción. Three local girls are sitting opposite the wall I am leaning up against. They are all looking at me, smiling. I'm looking at them as well, smiling. Looks like they are waiting for a bus, just like me. One of the girls are just gorgeous, about my age or slightly younger. We got eye contact, she is flirting with her unbelievable beautiful brown eyes. Maybe I should go and talk to her, but she probably doesn't speak any English. She is saying something, to me? "Que hora es?" I look at my watch. "Eh, eh, son las dos y media." They continue to look at me, flirting, laughing, talking to each other in indecipherable Guarani, the main language in Paraguay together with Spanish. Screw it, I'll try and go talk to her. See what happens. Shit, the bus is here, aaargh, typical that I should meet this girl now, when I am leaving the city. But hey, maybe they are going on the same bus as me. Yeah right, fat chance when there's about a million other buses. I run for the bus waving them all goodbye. They wave back at me, laughing like crazy. I can see them from my seat on the bus, they are coming my way. One of the girls get on the same bus as me, while the gorgeous girl and her other friend stay back at the gate. I see, they are just following one of their friends to the bus station. The engine starts, we are leaving. The two girls back at the terminal both blow me kisses and giggle like teenagers. That's it, I will never see her again. The most gorgeous girl ever, aaargh! On the whole bus journey I cannot get her image out of my head, her beautiful eyes, long dark hair and pearly white smile. I blew it again, didn't I!
Just before we get to our final destination I get a brilliant idea. Maybe I can try and talk to the friend, who got on the bus, and give her my e-mail. Explain that she should give it to her friend back in Asunción. "Hola, habla inglés?" "No." In broken Spanish I try to explain the problem and she seems to understand. We say goodbye, and I'm one big smile the rest of the day. I know all this sounds stupid, but she was the most gorgeous girl ever. I couldn't just leave without knowing. For the next few days I check my e-mail every five minutes, and on the fourth day I got a mail from Cynthia. She even writes in English. She wants to know more about me, what am I doing in Paraguay etc.
For the next few months while I am traveling around Brazil, Argentina and Chile I cannot stop thinking about this girl. The image from the bus terminal in Asunción is stuck in my brain. It take weeks before I start looking at other girls again. We talk on e-mail and messenger almost daily. She would like to meet me again, properly, and wonder if I will ever return to Paraguay? Yes, possibly. If I got a girlfriend back home, or maybe another girlfriend in Latin America? No, of course not. I'm flying back home from Santiago, Chile, in a few weeks. Maybe I should just skip a few of my planned destinations, and make my way back to Asunción instead. See what happens. Me and the gorgeous girl, hopefully together. Yes, that's it! For the next two days it's bus ride after bus ride, as I couldn't afford to fly to Asunción. I haven't told her when I am coming, only hinted that it is a possibility that I may return one day. I want it to be a surprise. Finally I am back in Asunción, and I splurge on a pretty posh hotel in case she wants to come visit. Then I call her, for the first time ever, and tell her where I am. Excitement! She even speaks pretty good English. I ask her if she wants to come to my hotel and have dinner with me. Of course. I wait in my room, extremely nervous. My whole body is shaking. Someone knocks on the door. I'm sweating like crazy. One last look in the mirror, cool t-shirt dude, and I go for the door. "Hola Cynthia..........oops". It's not the gorgeous girl, but her ugly friend from the bus station. She gives me a looooooooong hug. Looks like Cynthia isn't the Cynthia I expected. Man, this is a nightmare. She gave my e-mail to the wrong girl. It was the gorgeous one and not her ugly friend I flirted with. How could she not know? I've been sending cheesy e-mails to Cynthia for several months now, shit! All I want to do is cry, but I somehow manage to make it through the dinner. I also want to run away from Asunción but I accept an invitation to a party the next day, in case the gorgeous girl is there. I need to talk to her. I just have to. I tell Cynthia that I am not feeling well, but that I will see her tomorrow at the party. She seems to understand. Cynthia, she is a nice enough girl, but not really what I expected. Far, very far, from it. I'll probably break this girls heart and my own at the same time. I have made a major mess haven't I?
A 25 year old guy is sitting next to me on the bus out of Asunción. He is the first and only backpacker I see or meet during my stay in Paraguay. So I guess Lonely Planet is almost right when they claim that backpackers are less common in Paraguay than jaguars. He is on his way to Santiago, Chile, in order to catch a flight home. He talks for five hours straight until I reach my destination, he just need to get it all out. He seems a bit depressed when telling me the above story, but also manage to smile and shake his head at his own stupidness.
Everyone at the party was really excited for Cynthia and her new Gringo boyfriend. It also turns out that he met the gorgeous girl that same night. She was there with her new boyfriend. But as Cynthia was the only one speaking English at the party, he didn't really get to talk to the gorgeous girl. Only a quick "Hola." He didn't even get her name properly. And, he didn't really say goodbye to Cynthia either. Only told her quickly the next day that he had to go back home, family matters. That he would mail her later, when back home.
I say goodbye to the talkative backpacker. I feel a bit sorry for him, and Cynthia. He is not sure about what he will tell Cynthia when back home, but promise that he at least will mail her. He is right, he made a major mess didn't he?

PS! You meet all sorts of interesting characters when out traveling. And this time a five hours bus ride felt more like minutes.
