Wed 24th - Sat 27th Jan.
Huaraz is one of the best places for hiking in the country so we went hiking. Just a token, pansy-assed one day thing, and we didn´t even get to our intended destination. We wanted to hike to Lake Churup, but about 4 hours in, the path became hard to make out. We climbed a hill with loads of rocks but it became hazardous to climb as it was raining and the rocks were wet. So we just went back. It was still worth it for the splendid views, that feeling of remote isolation in the Andes, the friendly villagefolk we met along the way and the work out (tough climbing at 4800m). We stayed in this mad-house of a hostal. More of a familly house, the couple running it were really kind and friendly. They weren´t half mad though - at breakfast one morning the father and daughter threw jugs of water at each other for fun. Mystified, I later realised that this is a popular tradition in S America in February for Carnaval. They were getting an early start!!
