April 26 2009

We arrived in Ballina
still in Northern NSW on April 24th after a longer journey than we
had thought as we had to take a detour off the Pacific Highway because of a
nasty fatal accident at Iluka near Yamba south of Ballina. We took the Summerland Way which was
quite scenic and took us via Casino and Lismore. That took Steve down memory lane as he had driven the fifth
wheeler back via Casino when we first bought it. He said he was gripping onto the steering wheel for grim
death then as it was his first experience of driving such a big rig so he had
no chance to take in the scenery.
Our trip was about 260 kms.

We arrived in Ballina
about 2.30pm and set up. Then we
went for a quick trip into the town and a walk along the promenade/jetty to the
heads. We saw the most amazing
sunset but neither of us had brought our cameras! The next night the sunset was not so spectacular! On Saturday the 25th April,
Anzac Day, we watched the Anzac parade through the main street of Ballina. There were so many people there and a
flypast of one plane! All the kids
from the local schools seemed to be marching as well which was lovely to see.

Ballina is really
lovely - really like it. The coastline is beautiful. I am going to run out of adjectives to describe what we are
seeing.

Today Sunday 26th
April we went for a drive through Lennox Head to Byron Bay and then back via
Bangalow. I have fallen in love
with Lennox Head - just gorgeous but too many people. It has certainly been discovered now. It felt like Noosa
probably was a few years back and as it started to get commercialised. We drove
and walked up to the Lighthouse at Byron Bay and took lots of happy snaps of
the spectacular views! Stunning
and well worth the effort. Then
Sally had a stroll around the Byron Bay shops and Steve had a read of his
latest book by the beach. After a
lovely lunch in Byron we made our way back to Ballina via Bangalow. We found a huge market there so we
spent a happy hour wondering around - well Sally was happy! Bangalow is a cute township as well -
basically just one street though!

We are off tomorrow to
Mooloolaba but two caravans arrived either side of us this afternoon so we have
been comparing notes about work availability as we go around. One set of neighbours has take 3 years
to get from Perth across the top and to Ballina!!! I think we will be doing it a bit quicker than that! More
anon.
