Around mid morning myself and Mitch set off from Mancora. The trip to Lobitos involves a short mototaxi (tuk tuk) ride, then a 2 hour bus, then a collectivo (crappy really old van loaded with people and gear on the roof). All in all, just under 4 hours and relatively straight forward, I was bloody glad to be doing it with someone that knew what they were doing though. The roads are terrible and all there is to see is rubbish and small oil pumps littered all over the place. Apparently there is bulk oil underground, and Talara was established by the US then left as support for the oil they are taking. Unfortunately its become all too familiar of these examples in South America, where a country comes in, rapes the resources and leaves a dump behind.

Lobitos is a dirt town very similar to the one nearby, with oil pumps and rubbish galore. There are a couple of houses that have been turned into stores or restaurants selling food, water and basic items. The only draw card to this place are the 3 or 4 waves within walking distance. There are a couple of really basic hostels, and if your lucky you'll find one with running water. We stayed at 'Nachos', a family home that has had a couple of extra rooms attached to house surfers. It has electricity, running water and even a tv, so is pretty much as good as it gets in Lobitos! Fortunately decent swell kicked in while we were in Lobitos and we scored really good surf over our 3 days there. If we weren't surfing, then we were reading, hanging in the hammocks or playing ping pong.
