An early morning flight took us to Salvador at about midday- made a great change from all the night buses!! What a great place.... huge African influence here from the slave trading days so a major change from the Brazil I`ve seen so far.
Although Salvador is a huge thriving city, we stayed in the old cultural centre which is packed full of old colonial buildings and museums. Found our cheapest beer so far in a restaurant near the hotel at only one real per can (about 20 pence!). Explored many of the museums and saw one of the best folklore shows I have ever seen in the local hall which showcased many of the local dancing styles such as Capoiera( a kind of martial arts dancing) and also featuring many of the Gods which the local people use to invoke the spirits of their dead relatives!
We also took the time to visit a turtle sanctuary at Praia Do Forte- although this was a little dissappointing (didnt get to see the millions of hatched babies as I did in Sri Lanka!) the area itself had spectacular beaches which had their own little rock pools in which you completely chill out....had a fantastic dinner before the bus home (a shrimp Mocequa) which was spoilt only by the sudden invasion of flies which appeared from nowhere!!
For some bizarre reason tuesday night is party night in this town and the place went crazy with live bands playing on stages specially set up for the night and mobile bars everywhere selling Caprihinas for only 3 reals (about 80 pence)- it was a great farewell to Salvador....
