Milan was our final destination in Italy. We had a magnificent train journey west from Venice, getting a view of the snow capped mountaines along the way. We arrived in Milan mid-afternoon and only had the afternoon and evening to look around. Our hotel was nice and close to the train station which was handy. It was a pretty typical low-budget hotel in Italy, but what was cool was the talking parrot behind the check-in desk!
We headed over to the Milan Cathedral for a look. This Cathderal is the second biggest in Italy (after St Peter's Basilica), and one of the largest in the world. It's unusual looking as it has no bell tower, unlike most other cathedrals. Inside is more magnificent than the outisde. The interior is ginormous with huge columns towering all along the naive. Unfortunately we could not get up to the roof (it was a little late). It was a magnificent sight nonetheless
Eventually we made to the Castello, just as the sun was going down. We had a wander around inside, and decided to take a look at the museum where they had a small exhibition of Da Vinci's works. This was very interesting. Soon we found ourselves in a restaurant eating risotto for our last meal in Italy. At least for a while. Of course we concluded dinner with a tasty gelati!
As for Milan, that was about it. I liked the city, and it is much more like Paris or London than any of the other cities we visited in Italy. A big modern magnificent city. It was good to take a quick look around and it would be good to return one day.
As for Italy. I loved it. Every city and location we went to had different things to offer. The food was great (best in Naples), and the sights were probably the best I've seen in Europe. Ancient Rome was my highlight for sights, with Pompeii a close second. I found it not as expensive as expected, especially all our train journeying (all the trips came to a total of only 90 euro!). I was impressed at how easy it was to get around too! I had high expectations for Italy and it did not dissapoint. Rome is just about my favourite city in Europe. I loved it and want to go back some day (soon!). Next time well do other things - hopefully Sicily, the mountains, the lakes, and Florence. The country sure has a lot to offer.
The next morning (Monday 4th Feb) we headed by bus to the Malpensa airport for our flight back to Glasgow. It was a magnificent trip, and it was especially good to do a decent amount of travel again.

01 - Milan Cathedral
. The cathedral square that greets the front of the cathedral is impressive too. We had a wander around and then headed up the main street towards Castello Sforzesco. We were stopped on the way by a magnificent exhibition of photography, a bit like the Steve Bloom exhibition we saw in Stockholm. We spent a while here looking at the photos, all part of a National Geographic festival. Eventually we made to the Castello, just as the sun was going down.
