A couple of you farm boys have asked me about the equipment that we use on the land so here goes briefly.

The water buffalo used to be the main item of farm equipment but most today use what is colloquially known as an 'iron buffalo'.  Basically a lawn mower sized motor, with much more power, which is used for hauling trailers, ploughing, pumping water, and endless other tasks with an assortment of attachable tools.  Most of there are manufactured by Kubota and retail at about 200 pounds for the power unit alone.
Over the last couple of years a few tractors have appeared and the better off or more business astute villagers can make a living renting the vehicle without having to work too hard themselves.  Their are a few Ford but the majority are Kubota and Yanmar.  There is a small shop in the nearest town that sells a range of farm machinery.  Currently they are showcasing a John Deere 5310K MFWD tractor.  They knew it was American but said that it had been assembled in India for a Bangkok supplier Kamol Industries Co Ltd.  It was selling at approx 20,000 pounds.  They also had a tractor by Talaythong, I believe a Thai company, and a few iron buffaloes.

There seems to be an increasing demand for tractors with more appearing all of the time and Kubota have actually opened a showroom some 30km from where we are with a huge range of different sized models.

From what I can tell most of the models on sale from all countries are built for the local market here and are not available in Europe, US, etc but obviously I am not an expert !!!

Will attach a few photos later for you guys with a tractor fetish !!
