A full day travelling. We departed just after 9.00am for the short journey to Nelson Airport where we dropped off the car and eventually arrived at our accommodation in Trinity Beach (near Cairns) at 11.45pm (which would have been 2.45am the following morning back in New Zealand).
Next leg was to Sydney, where we had to queue to get through immigration (three counters for Australia and NZ passport holders, one for all others!!!), negotiate our way through quarantine restrictions with a wooden necklace and certain provisions and then wait around for our delayed onward flight to Cairns (Thunderstorms at Brisbane!).
On arriving at Cairns we were delayed further as we had to remain seated on landing while the Federal Police boarded and detained a guy (we think for abusing the cabin crew) - added some excitement!! Some of the passengers started singing "Bad Boy, Bad Boy, Wotcha going to do when they come for you".
Picked up the car with no hitches from an English guy from Bolton and headed to Trinity Beach - would have been 20 minutes if Steve hadn't taken a detour in the dark up a windy mountain road with no turning places.
Steve at Christchurch Airport
The first leg was a short flight to Christchurch. We congratulated ourselves on deciding to fly and save a 6 ½ hour drive - would probably have been much longer today as the weather was atrocious.Next leg was to Sydney, where we had to queue to get through immigration (three counters for Australia and NZ passport holders, one for all others!!!), negotiate our way through quarantine restrictions with a wooden necklace and certain provisions and then wait around for our delayed onward flight to Cairns (Thunderstorms at Brisbane!).
