Where I stayed
What I did
Checked out the Paliser Hotel (where our hoi-poloi friends the Zelekas stayed, good for them !!). Cruised the downtown and tried on some cowboy hats. Spent a day at the Calgary Zoo where we lucky to be chosen to help the animal keepers touch train one of the hippos. We all got a chance to touch this gentle giant. What a great experience. Another day was spent at the Telus Spark Centre, along with the Military Museum honoring the Lord Strathcona regiment, and Albertans who served in various wars in the Army, Navy and Air Force. A great museum!
Spent half a day looking around the Olympic Park . Sight of several events of the 1988 winter Olympic games ( ski jump, bob sled, luge) We were saddened to see how run down and poorly maintained things were. The 90 meter and 70 meter ski jumps looked abandoned and the top of the 90 meter jump is used as a launch area for a zip line ride!! But we were encouraged to see that there was some work going on to develop the down hill ski area and the mountain bike trails. It is a shame to see such facilities go to waste.
Calgary boosts great views of the mountains, easy access to year-round recreation and activities, first class accommodations and restaurants, nominal traffic (compared to southern Ontario's mess) and friendly, courteous people (Ontarians could learn some road manners from these folks!) and jobs!!!!
After a week with our friends, it was time to part ways with their vacation time over and we needed to head out. Sad to say goodbye but the highway beckoned..........
