So, I guess I should write a little bit about work!

I have set up a month-long volunteer program through Alliances Abroad to keep me busy here in Quito. I am working at Hospital del Sur "Enrique Garces," one of the biggest public hospitals in the city. Since it is a public hospital, we do see the poorest in Quito; there have been a number of times that a patient has turned down a $5 or $10 test or procedure (blood tests, stitches, etc.)that is fairly critical to the personīs health. The hospital work is interesting to say the least...I have been working in the Emergency Room and have already seen a suicide attempt, a school-wide food contamination incident (25+ kids affected), numerous traffic accidents, and a few violence related injuries. I've been hanging around with a group of Ecuadorian medical students and have gotten to sit in on some of their classes. I've been learning a lot, even though it can be hard sometimes with the language and the medical terminology. Starting today I will be working in neonatology and will hopefully see one of the happier sides of medicine!

Hello! I've been offered to volunteer at this hospital for a couple of months during the summer. My spanish is still basic and I will be taking intensive spanish lessons for two weeks before volunteering with the hospital. How was your spanish going into the work? i'm worried about my ability to communicate effectively... I would appreciate any feedback on your experience there. I have been working towards a degree in nursing for BSN
