Paris to head to Bordeaux. At about noon, we arrived at Chambord, a huge castle started in 1519 by King Francis I as a hunting retreat. It is rumored to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci and featured an impressive double
Helix spiral staircase. It was very large and cold and we spent about an hour looking in the big empty rooms. Then back on the bus for some much needed r n' r and we arrived in Bordeaux at about 7:00. We went for a group dinner at a local restaurant, and then we had about an hour and a half of free time before the bus back to our hotel, so James and I went with a couple from Oakville on a speed tour to some key sights in Bordeaux. Especially beautiful was a church built in the 11th century. We finished at a really cool wine bar where you load a card with money and then serve yourself from wine bottles in kind of a pop fountain style. Very cool. We are quite taken with Bordeaux and would love to come back here for a longer stay in the future.
Our impression of France after four days is that everyone is able to speak English, no one is snobby as we expected, and everyone smokes!
Tomorrow it's on the bus again headed to Carcasonne. Having a great time with our new Aussie and Kiwi mates:)
