As we mentioned in our last post we were a little but nervous about getting to Athens as both Beijing and Athens were going through interesting changes while we were due to pass through them.
At 6.30pm we locked up and said goodbye to our little apartment and went down stairs to meet our driver. We found him all right and it turned out it was the same man who had picked us from Beijing on day one! The drive was fine until we entered the larger area of Beijing. W had mentioned earlier Beijing was going into the beginning of the large leadership handover of the communist party, which happens once a decade. As such the security was intense. Our taxi cab was stopped for police checkpoints twice as we entered the main Beijing highway. The checkpoints were run by the police but were being over seen by heavily armed PLA soldiers. The police checked our passports, and did a quick check of the taxi cab to be sure we weren't trying to sneak any anti-communist propaganda into the capital. After this they waved us on and we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare, our flight was not until 2.00am after all!
The flight from Beijing to Athens, via Moscow, was rather unexciting. We flew with Aeroflot, the national carrier of Russia, which was rather cramped but exceptionally cheap.
Arriving in Athens we were rather uncertain what the situation would be as the Greeks had been striking for the last couple days, as we mentioned last time.
Our plane was able to land successfully and one through customs we discovered that due to the strike there were not public busses, no taxi cabs and no trains going from the airport to the centre of Athens. We were informed by a helpful lady that was Bly one regional bus that was being used today day to get people from the airport into the city, so we hopped on it and let the adventure begin.
Editors Note: We will try to do our best updating the blog while we are on the go but we are here to enjoy the experience not document them, that will comes after :)
