Feeling slightly refreshed after the sleep - and slightly Bipolar after the moments of mad excitement followed by moments of terror - we decided that we should venture outside and see what we have really gotten ourselves into.

We started by walking around the block, simple enough and at least this way there aren't any nasty crazy roads to cross! After wandering around the block a couple times we decided to try our luck at purchasing something from the 7Eleven. We wander inside and are overjoyed to find the same Mr Kwon Peach flavored Ice Tea that Captain Ben stocked in Christchurch (only for half the price)!

While we were in the store a massive explosion started on the road outside.  We had heard this noise before from our apartment and couldn't quite work out what they were, it sounded like a gunfight outside our window, but apparently it is just a custom in China to block off the street by lighting massive chains of firecrackers to celebrate weddings (or shop openings, or anything else that may require celebration).

We then continued on our walk around the block and got really brave, deciding to venture across a massive road. After standing on the sidewalk for 5min looking like dumb-westerners trying to figure out how the traffic lights and pedestrian crossing all go together, we made it across in one piece.  The feeling of accomplishment from this one simple act was unreal!

After enjoying our tea in a small park/communist monument - see pics, we returned home to recover form our ordeal, with more sleep

By about 6pm local time (China is 4 hours behind NZ) we were getting pretty hungry so we went down and found a pizza shop at the bottom of our building - not the most chinese/exotic food we could've had on our first night we had done all of our adventuring for one day! (And they had an English menu, score!)
