Let me start by saying that we never met someone we didn't like in San Antonio. Our first of many ambassadors to the city was the innkeeper at the Riverwalk Vista, Joan. She had come through San Antonio with her husband several years past on the way to Hawaii, where they had planned to retire. Turns out they liked San Antonio so much that they never left.

We did leave, but before we did we learned that San Antonio is truly charming. We spent time walking along the Riverwalk, saw the Alamo, and enjoyed some nightlife.

Monday night we decided to go out for some drinks at the Brooklynite. This place has excellent reviews, and lived up to our expectations. I tried the Bees Knees. This drink was not on the menu, our bartender Joe made it for me just by talking with me about what type of drinks I typically enjoy. The drink is as it sounds, a gin cocktail with flavors of lemon and honey. Jeremy had a Corpse Reviver #2, which includes gin, orange liqueur and absinthe. Those were great, but we couldn't let the adventure end there, so we ordered a PB&J and a Penicillin.

After we had ordered our second drink, two tumbleweeds rolled into the bar and took seats next to us. Earl and Terry. It didn't take long to strike up a conversation, after all people in San Antonio are just friendly. Terry claimed to be the designated driver, but Earl introduced himself as Terry's designated drunk. We sipped our cocktails and got to know these two, they asked where we had been and where we were headed.

As his second drink, Earl decided to order a Monkey Gland. This drink is a teaspoon of grenadine at the bottom of a decorative cocktail glass, covered by a screwdriver. The grenadine at the bottom is the "gland", Earl's favorite part. Earl decided that we would just have to try a Monkey Gland for ourselves and bought us a round. They were as good as Earl said they would be.

Later, the owner, Jeret showed up to check in on things. We had a great time picking his brain on what it takes to start a bar. He recommended some bars we might try along the west coast as we make our way up to Canada. You would not know just from talking with him that Jeret's bold mixology has earned him the Rising Star Award and his bar a nomination for the James Beard Culinary Award.

Honestly, we had a great time in San Antonio, and were presently surprised by the fun people there. We will likely pay the city a second visit on our way back east next month.
